Should You Choose Platinum Over White Gold?

With gold prices soaring, platinum offers a compelling alternative for jewelry designers and manufacturers. But is it right for you?

If you’re a jewelry designer or manufacturer, the price of gold might have you looking for an alternative. In these uncertain times, both individuals and banks are turning to gold as an investment, driving up its price. At the same time, gold is becoming increasingly important in electronics and renewable energy. Today, the cost of gold per ounce has jumped to nearly three times the price of platinum. (as of Feb.2, 2025)

While gold is far more expensive than platinum, it is not a far superior metal. When you choose platinum, there is no sacrificing quality for price. You get a metal that does not tarnish and is purer, more durable, and just as luxurious and beautiful—at a fraction of the cost.

Platinum Ages Like Fine Wine

While pure, 24kt gold doesn’t tarnish, you rarely use gold in its pure form in jewelry as it is soft enough to bend by hand.

Platinum, on the other hand, ages like fine wine, becoming only richer and more complex in appearance over time. Over the years, platinum jewelry develops a beautiful patina prized by collectors, a lovely reminder of the passage of time. Some things just get better with age!

Platinum Can Stand the Test of Time

For those who prefer keeping their rings shiny and new, platinum, unlike white gold, can be polished without losing as much mass as gold. Platinum is a malleable metal, like gold, making it suitable for jewelry, but it is more durable and can stand up to repeated polishes better than gold.

Even if you prefer the look of gold jewelry, or want to offer your customers a variety of metals to choose from, platinum prongs will hold a gemstone in place better than gold. Our 5% ruthenium platinum, a 95% pure white platinum alloy, combines the malleability of platinum with the strength of ruthenium. It’s better suited to gripping a gemstone without snapping under pressure than gold.

Hypoallergenic Platinum Is Nothing to Sneeze At

White gold is stunning when paired with a bold-colored gemstone like an icy blue sapphire or enchanting green emerald. The only problem with these metals is that many people are allergic or sensitive to metals such as zinc, nickel, and copper. These metals are often found in silver and white gold alloys. Ruthenium platinum is 95% pure platinum, hypoallergenic, and safe for all kinds of skin. The only reaction your customers will have is “wow!”

Our RuPt alloy is constituted of 5% ruthenium and 95% platinum. All 950 PT alloys can be stamped PT, PLAT, 950PT, or 950 PLAT.
